Available platforms for ordering food online can have disorganized, inefficient ordering systems and web platforms. Since restaurants have a lot of information to present on their platforms, along with ordering online, this website was designed to be user-friendly with a clear, intuitive navigation system for an easy ordering system.
My Role: UX Designer | Responsibilities: Interviews, ideation, sketching, prototyping, accessibility, usability, evaluation
Design Question:
How might we improve online ordering platforms for customers so that they have a straightforward and efficient ordering experience?
User Research Summary:
I created and utilized interviews, empathy maps, and observations to gain a better understanding of user needs. I discovered that many users depend on online ordering to order food in their busy lives. However, many users noted that online ordering systems can be "finnicky" and have cluttered information, which leads to confusing navigation. Thus, causing an experience that was invented to expedite and create a smooth ordering process to become challenging for them, defeating the purpose of online ordering.
Pain Points:
Sitemap:
Difficulty with interpreting information and navigation on the platform was a primary pain point for users, so I used that knowledge to create a sitemap and divide important categories up to what would be most intuitive for the user.
Ideation:
The ideation process started by brainstorming paper wireframes reflecting the needs of the user. Because customers access the platform on different screen sizes, I worked on wireframes with different screen sizes so that the platform is responsive to different screens and still presents consistent information across devices.
Wireframes & Prototyping:
Transferring information from paper to digital wireframes made it easier to understand how the design could address user pain points and create a smoother online experience for the user. Visual hierarchy and button placement was a key part to creating this design to make information transparent to the user. Again, digital wireframes were created for different screen sizes to account for the different devices that users would access the platform on.
Usability Study Findings:
Unmoderated usability study | US (remote) | 5 participants | 10-15 minutes
Next Steps:
Next steps include conducting another round of usability studies and iterating on designs to further address user pain points and ideating new features to add to the website.
Takeaways:
The Happy Subs website brings intuitive design to an online ordering system. This allows users to engage with the website with images and clear visual hierarchy for easy navigation.
What I Learned:
Designing this website taught me how important considering the needs of users from all different stages of life and how small design changes can greatly impact the user experience.
